Children's Ministries & Modern Worship Director
Malia Henson is a pianist, vocalist, music educator, vocal coach, worship leader, and children’s ministry servant whose life and career have been devoted to music, mentorship, faith, and helping others discover their God-given gifts. A native of Double Springs, Alabama, Malia began studying piano in the second grade under the guidance of her aunt, Bonnie Knight. What began as a childhood introduction to music developed into a lifelong passion for music, ministry, and teaching.
Malia has more than 30 years of experience teaching private piano and voice. Through her studio, she works with students of all ages, helping them develop musical skills, confidence, discipline, and a lasting appreciation for the arts. She has also coached numerous young women preparing for pageants and competitions, drawing on her own experience competing in the Miss Alabama Scholarship Program, where she received scholarships in talent, interview, and physical fitness.
Her formal musical education includes extensive study in piano, voice, choral conducting, and organ performance. During her college years, she studied piano with Jane Hudson, Dr. John Stallsmith, and Delores Howard, while her vocal studies included work with her mother, Regina Henderson, and Dr. Rachel Mathes at UAB. She also studied choral conducting with Dr. Philip Copeland and organ performance with Dr. Stallsmith.
Malia's performance background is diverse, encompassing classical, choral, contemporary, and worship music. She has performed with the Alabama Symphony Orchestra Chorus and participated in UAB's Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, Opera Workshop, and Jazz Singers. She also played bass guitar with the UAB Jazz Band. Her accomplishments as a pianist include superior ratings at Alabama Federation Festivals, winning the Elbert Lingo Keyboard Artists Competition, recognition through Teen Talent, and a Gold Medal at the Birmingham-Southern Sonata Competition.
Faith and ministry are central to Malia's life and work. Alongside her professional music career, she has been actively involved in children's ministries, using music, teaching, and mentorship to help children develop confidence, creativity, and a strong foundation of faith. She has a particular passion for creating engaging, encouraging environments where children can learn, participate, and understand that their individual gifts have purpose.
Malia has also served extensively in worship ministry, including experience as a praise-band musician and vocalist. Her musical versatility allows her to contribute across a range of instruments and styles, from piano and vocals to bass guitar and contemporary worship. As a worship leader, she has participated in women's conferences, church ministries, and Kairos of Alabama, bringing together her musical abilities and passion for serving others.
She has also served as a guest clinician and vocal coach for choir retreats and has invested considerable time mentoring young musicians and performers. Whether teaching a beginning piano student, coaching a vocalist, leading children in ministry, singing with a praise band, or serving as a worship leader, Malia approaches each opportunity with the belief that music can build confidence, strengthen community, and point people towards beginning a relationship with Jesus.
Through teaching music, her church and children's ministry involvement, worship leadership, and community service, Malia continues to invest in the next generation of musicians, singers, performers, and leaders. Her work reflects a lifelong commitment to using music not only as an art form, but also as a vehicle for education, encouragement, ministry, and meaningful connection.
